What is a Master Plan?

A long range master plan is a policy document that details the Town's long-term vision and goals, and outlines the steps necessary to achieve them. The plan is intended to guide growth and development in an organized, efficient, and sustainable manner. To do so, it looks to the future to anticipate trends and issues that could impact how growth and development occur. The plan is long range in scope, focusing on the ultimate needs of the community rather than the pressing concerns of today.

Master Plan Update

While the planning horizon for a Master Plan is typically 20-30 years, it's important to review and update the plan in the interim to ensure the vision described in the plan is still the vision residents have for the community. The Town's existing Master Plan was adopted in 2010. Since that time, many of the plan's goals have been completed and new opportunities have been presented. With extensive public participation, residents will create a blueprint for the Town that outlines the steps needed to achieve the community's vision.

Think Tank

The Town Council selected 15 members of the community to serve on the Blueprint Bedford Think Tank. They represent the following groups: Housing, Economic Development & Design Professionals - Residents - Business Community - Planning Board - Town Council - Historic District Commission - Conservation Commission - Recreation Advisory Committee.

The mission of the Think Tank is to:

  • To create awareness of the project among stakeholders;
  • To educate all stakeholders about master planning best practices;
  • To provide the public multiple opportunities to engage in the conversation about the future of the Town;
  • To provide the public with multiple opportunities to voice their opinions, including members of the community not commonly represented in traditional public forums and meetings;
  • To identify champions for this project and ask them to encourage their neighbors and local officials to attend appropriate meetings;
  • To build consensus for the Master Plan layout, vision, strategic direction and project concepts.

To help us with this important task, the Town has engaged consultants Town Planning & Urban Design Collaborative. We look forward to hearing everyone's voice during this update process. Visit this website often to stay updated on progress, events and to provide your input and feedback.
